Pack N Move Renewable Energy provides solar thermal O&M — operation and maintenance for concentrated solar power (CSP) plants, with particular depth in parabolic trough technology. A trough plant combines thousands of tracking mirrors, a heat-transfer loop running at several hundred degrees, and a conventional power block, and every one of those systems has to work for the plant to produce. Our job is to keep that whole chain available.
We support plant operators, public sector authorities, and private projects. Our first delivered project was for Egypt's New & Renewable Energy Authority (NREA) — a purpose-built mirror-cleaning vehicle for its concentrated solar collectors.
What CSP operation and maintenance covers
A CSP plant loses money differently in each of its three main systems, so we treat them separately.
The solar field
Parabolic trough maintenance starts in the field: mirror condition and reflectivity, receiver tubes (heat collector elements), ball joint and swivel joint assemblies, tracking drives, and the collector structure itself. Two losses accumulate quietly here — soiling, which cuts the energy reaching the receiver, and mis-tracking, which drifts the focal line off the absorber tube. Both are recoverable with routine attention: mirror cleaning on a cadence matched to local soiling rates, and periodic tracking calibration across the field.
The heat-transfer fluid system
In a trough plant the heat-transfer fluid (HTF) sets the ceiling on performance. Synthetic thermal oils degrade when overheated or exposed to air, forming light fractions that raise vapour pressure and heavy fractions that foul heat exchangers. O&M here means regular fluid sampling and analysis, keeping nitrogen blanketing and ullage systems working, managing freeze protection through cold nights, and maintaining the expansion and overflow vessels that absorb thermal cycling.
The power block and balance of plant
The steam cycle, turbine, heat exchangers, and cooling systems are conventional equipment — but in a CSP plant they cycle daily, which is harder on them than baseload duty. Start-up reliability and morning ramp time are availability in disguise: a turbine that starts slowly each day gives up productive daylight all year.
How we structure a maintenance programme
Neither pure reaction nor a rigid service calendar is efficient. We classify equipment by criticality and failure behaviour, then build the programme around that:
- Condition-based tasks for critical rotating and tracking equipment, driven by vibration, temperature, and performance data.
- Time-based preventive tasks for components with predictable wear — lubrication, seals, filters, and calibration.
- Planned corrective work for lower-criticality items, batched to minimise crew mobilisation.
- Run-to-failure only where a failure is cheap, safe, and quickly recoverable — with spares on the shelf.
The metric that governs all of it is availability. We track it separately for the solar field, the HTF system, and the power block, because each gap calls for a different fix — a field that trips on windy afternoons is not the same problem as a pump that needs frequent intervention.
Mirror cleaning and field equipment
Soiling is typically the largest recoverable loss in a solar field, and cleaning it well at scale needs purpose-built equipment. For NREA we supplied a Fermupe / Masesur cleaning system mounted on a JCB Fastrac 4160, imported from Spain — a vehicle that cleans full rows of parabolic mirrors faster and more gently than the improvised equipment it replaced. The same combination of equipment sourcing and field method is available to other trough operators.
Well-run CSP plants are not the ones that never have problems. They are the ones whose problems are anticipated, contained, and recorded.

Maintenance only works when the part is on the shelf and the programme reflects how the plant actually behaves. Alongside O&M we provide spare parts supply for solar thermal plants — including obsolete and discontinued components — and engineering consultancy for the assessments and performance evaluations that keep a maintenance programme grounded in data.
